Leadership as the center piece in the success of teams, organisations, communities and societies has been proven. In this Certificate, you will learn to effectively lead in the global context of 21st century. You gain powerful leadership roadmaps, approaches and tools that will enable you to inspire and lead people effectively in within an organizational setting. Throughout the Certificate exemplary leaders from different spheres- such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Lou Gerstner, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein - will be used to demonstrate and illustrate key learning points.

Leading Yourself: Me: In this Unit you will begin the leadership journey with an orientation to the Leadership Universe consisting of Me, Us and World and the five C’s and Intelligences of masterful leaders. This is followed by helping you understand your personal leadership strengths and development areas as a leader. The ability to have insight into who and what you are, and what you stand for as a leader is critical in being a masterful leader. Personal leadership entails insight into personal traits, intellect, personality, temperament, style, values and looking after your personal well-being.
You will learn:
- How to locate a leader in the Leadership Universe of leading yourself (Me), leading others (We), and leading in a complex global context (World).
- To identify examples of the five C’s of Masterful Leadership – Character, Competence, Caring, Commitment and Connected.
- The five Intelligences of a masterful leader - Intra- and Interpersonal, Conceptual, Spiritual, Action and Contextual.
- To assess your personal strengths and development areas as a leader in terms of Character and Competence.
- What factors may enhance or impede your personal leadership mastery.
Leading Others: We: This Unit extends the leadership journey to include Others through sharing an inspiring vision and solid values, empowering and enabling others, modeling the way, encouraging the heart and the achievement of results. Leaders must work with Others to produce results for the organization. Establishing and nurturing relationships is vital. It commences with healthy, constructive one-on-one relationships through building a high performance, engaged team, achieving with fellow leaders, to engaging the stakeholders of the organization in order to obtain the endorsements and support from outside of the organization.
You will learn:
- How to set up and sustain an effective leadership process with its key levers.
- To map the multiple relationships and interactions through which you have to lead: one-on-one; your team, colleagues and stakeholders.
- To Mobilize Others to become enthusiastic and dedicated followers – the We – of you as a caring leader.
- The critical success factors to enhance your Interpersonal Mastery.
Leading in Context: World: Masterful leadership requires the constructive engagement with the context in which you, as leader, are embedded: the operating arena of your organisation, position and career. This requires having the right set of glasses on in looking at the world, and engaging with the context at the requisite level of complexity. Finally, you will have to weave everything together into a powerful story, using the combination of the “Me, We and World” to inspire, lead and produce results that matter. The story will give expression to your personal stance and brand as a leader.
You will learn:
- The right set of glasses to use and understand the context: choose an appropriate world view.
- About complexity levels with the context in which you are embedded as a leader in demonstrating commitment and connectivity: the operating arena of your organisation, position and career.
- Ways to weave together a coherent and meaningful story as a leader that inspires action.
- Strategies to integrate the five C’s – Character, Competence, Caring, Commitment and Connected – into a personal stance and brand as a masterful leader.

Theo Veldsman, PHD
Dr. Theo Veldsman is regarded as one of the pioneers in change navigation, organisational design, strategic people management and leadership in South Africa, and beyond. Professor Veldsman leads an experienced faculty team, specializing in leadership excellence, from the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management at the University of Johannesburg for this Certificate.
Albert Wort, PHD
Dr. Albert Wort is regarded as a thought leader in the field of Personal Leadership and the application within the Professional context. He holds numerous academic qualifications gained over a period of 25 years in the different field of human behavior and leadership. He is part of the academic team at the University of Johannesburg in the department of Industrial Psychology and People Management.
Carolina Henn, PHD
Dr. Carolina Henn consults as a psychologist in private practice, and has significant experience in psychological assessment and the measurement of personality and ability. Carolina completed her PhD in Psychology in 2005. She joined the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management at the University of Johannesburg in 2008.
Roslyn T. De Braine, PHD
Dr. Roslyn Braine is a lecturer at the Department of Industrial Psychology & People Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).She has contributed to three chapters of an international textbook on the Conceptualisation and measurement of Work Identity. Roslyn is also the module leader for Interpersonal Leadership in the Masters degree in Personal, Interpersonal and Professional Leadership at UJ.
Anita Bosch, PHD
Dr. Anita Bosch is an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She served on the board of the South African Board for People Practices (2006-2009) and is a registered Master HR Practitioner. She is the lead researcher of the Women in the Workplace Research Programme at the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management.
Magda Hewitt, PHD
Dr. Magda Hewitt is currently situated within the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management (IPPM) at the University of Johannesburg. She heads the Leadership Doctoral and Masters in Personal and Professional Leadership, the Leadership in Emerging Countries and the new Leadership Coaching programs.

|How is the Short Course Certificate designed?||Each Certificate Course is specialized content from a top university and contains three Units. Each Unit has an end of Unit quiz which must be passed prior to moving forward. At the end of all three Units, you must pass a Certificate final exam in order to earn the Short Course Certificate.|
|How is the Short Course Certificate Unit graded?||The Units are pass/fail in nature and the student must achieve at least 80% to pass. Students will need to pass the end of Certificate exam to complete and receive the Certificate.|
|How many times can I take an end of Unit quiz in the Short Course Certificate?||The Unit quiz may be taken an unlimited number of times.|
|How many times can I take the Short Course end of Certificate exam?||Students have two attempts to pass the end of Certificate final exam. Students who do not achieve the required minimum score of 80% by the second attempt will not pass the Course and will not receive a Certificate.|
|How long do I have to complete the Short Course Certificate Unit?||You will have 90 days to finish the Short Course Certificate.|
|What if I signed up for the wrong Certificate? (What is the refund policy?)||Your satisfaction is our goal. If for any reason you are not satisfied, you will have 3 days from purchase by which to request a refund for the Short Course Certificate.
